Adelaide Plains

The Adelaide Plains is one of several wine regions in the state of South Australia, which produces more than half of all Australian wine. The entire region, which takes its name after Queen Adelaide (wife of King William IV), is situated between the Mount Lofty Ranges (to the east) and the Gulf of Saint Vincent (to the west). This wine region, with a population of well over one million residents, is located about 30 kilometres north of the city of Adelaide, the state capital.

Although the Adelaide Plains is one of the flattest and hottest wine regions in the state of South Australia, it is nonetheless quite fertile thanks to an annual rainfall of about 460 millimetres. The whole region may roughly be divided into three areas with the northern portion used for raising sheep and growing grains, the middle considered as the state's "bread basket" (in view of its market gardens and wineries), and the south occupied by the city of Adelaide.

The Adelaide Plains, through its numerous attractions, present opportunities for locals and visitors alike to experience and enjoy its culture and sights:

People in the Adelaide Plains are not likely to pass up the opportunity to sample the region's best wines. Connoisseurs (and otherwise) can drop by some of the area's wine-producing locales for a taste of their best products. Recommended sites include Dominic Versace Wines, Tenafeate Creek Wines, Uleybury Wines, and Virgara Wines.

Motoring enthusiasts will surely find the Adelaide Plains enjoyable thanks to local events that cater to the fans of this sport. Among these attractions, two of the more notable are the 4WD Turbo Australian Rally Championship Cars and the Australian V8 Motorsport Icons.

The Adelaide Plains also have locations for resident and visiting tourists to appreciate the region's sights and wildlife. Two of the more suitable places are the Humbug Scrub Wildlife Sanctuary and Para Wirra Recreation Park.
